*** MORSEL EXTRAS***
Re: To be Seen by Men
How many of us, who are engaged in the Lord's holy service, are
secretly cherishing some proud purpose of excelling other men, of
making a name, of securing money and applause! We will use the pulpit
as a pedestal for the adulation of the world, and the cross for a post
on which to hang garlands to our own glory. How often do we preach
sermons, or make addresses, and attend meetings, with no other thought
than to secure the recognition and goodwill of those with whom we
desire to stand well! We are not willing to trust our reputation with
Christ, or to be called fools for His sake....But all this must be laid
aside. We must have no private purposes to serve.

"And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love
to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets,
that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their
reward. "But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have
shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and
your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Mat 6:5-6)
"...though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else
thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: ...But what
things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet
indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge
of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all
things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ (Phil3:4,7-8)
