Re: "Dream Big"

This morning (Oct 21) close to "getting-up" time, as I was in-and-out
of being awake-and-asleep, with Moody Radio on the clock-radio, I was
suddenly "wide awake" as this song by The Martins came on. I'd never
heard it before, maybe you have. But it was SO utterly AWFUL, we need
to observe it's message and compare with Scripture, because its message
is one that many people espouse.

For you who know the song, please excuse if I slightly misquote some
phrases. I heard it only once, it's a rather snappy jazzy/rocky song
that goes by quickly. And I was still half-asleep as I was waking up.
But many of the phrases repeated a lot:

Dream big just like Jesus did. Dream big - spread your wings and
fly. Heaven's dreaming big for you. You don't know what you can do
until you try. Dream together with Jesus - He's dreaming big for you.

The basic feel that I was getting, hearing this song was: Let your
imagination go, and "GO FOR IT." That's what Jesus did - and God is
"hanging in there" with you.

This reminded me of a conversation years ago with my then
parents-in-law. I was just recently married. They knew I desired to be
serving the Lord in ministry. But the "doors" had not yet opened. I was
"puttering" in this and that..."waiting on the Lord." At the time, I
didn't know that I had just married an unequal yoke; nor, did I yet
realize the in-laws were not True Believers. They were fine upstanding
church people, and my father-in-law was on the elder board. I did not
know that my life would be characterized "in Midian" caring for
"Jethro's sheep" for some years. That I wasn't yet ready to "lead
Israel out of Egypt." But, I did know that I did not want to go "ahead
of" God.

Try to explain this to a successful businessman. And, one who, in his
younger years had captained his high school basketball team. A
"go-getter." Make plans, develope a strategy, and "GO FOR IT!" And so,
I was being encouraged to do the same regarding "ministry." They tried
to encourage me to sit down, come up with a strategy, and just "do it."
After all, "God can't DIRECT you if you're STANDING STILL. Get moving,
and let God tell you where to go."

"Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your
heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD! Rest in the LORD, and wait
patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way..
But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth."
(Ps27:14,37:7,9)

The song says, "spread your wings and fly." Do YOUR OWN thing, and God
is there with you. It is man-centered. Self-centered. The psalmist says
"cast me not away from Your presence, and take not Your Holy Spirit
from me." (Ps51:11) "Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Or where shall
I flee from Your presence?" (Ps139:7)

We are exhorted by Paul to be like Christ. "Let this mind be in you
which was also in Christ Jesus.."(Phil2:5) Even though Jesus was the
physical representation of God, He did not cling to that as a man and
do His own thing. But He humbled Himself to the form of a servant. He
continually said, "For I came down from Heaven, not to do My own will
but the will of Him who sent Me. (Jn6:38) "..I always do those things
which please Him [the Father]."(Jn8:29) "I come to do Your will, O
God." (Heb10:9)

As we follow God and do "His will" we often need to wait. It's not
"time" YET to do anything. And sometimes, we are NOT supposed to "DO
ANYTHING" as God will say, "STAND STILL and see the salvation of the
Lord, which He will prepare for you this day." (Ex14:13)

No, the Christian does not live "our dreams." Rather, "I have been
crucified with Christ, and I live; yet no longer I, but Christ lives in
me. And that life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith toward the
Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself on my behalf." (Gal2:20)

Amen!
