Re: If You are the Son of God
To go with this month's article: "God: the Son"
"Then the devil takes Him up into the holy city, and sets Him on the wing of the temple, and says to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: He shall give His angels charge concerning you, and, in their hands they shall bear you up, that you may not dash your foot against a stone." (Mt4:5-6)
"You who destroys the temple and builds it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." (Mt27:40)
"Now the serpent was more cunning than any living thing of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said to the woman, Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (Ge3:1)
"And the serpent said to the woman, You shall not die the death. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be as God, knowing good and evil." (Gen3:4-5)
(I only mention Reagan and Bush because once Clinton was in office, the economy steadily decreased, enough so that to save the noon-time gas money I got a hotplate and fixed my romen at the store, learned to give myself haircuts, and such. And once GW came into office, the economy 'jumped' again. Not 'imagining' things. Just...the 'bottom line' what it was.)
Nature is full of instances of a young life-form frought with peril to just make an 'appearance' into life. Certain sea turtles come to mind, where they hatch out onto the beach and swim into the ocean, and what percentage don't make it past the breakers, because something bigger comes along and makes a meal out of them? Etc,etc.
What would this situation be like if sin hadn't entered into the world? Instead of tending towards death, would animals have an abundance of life? All we know is 'death'. Such is satan and his 'leadership'.
So, Adam and Eve are just barely on the scene in a 'perfect' environment, and along comes the Serpent to spoil it! Has God (really) said? Naw...He knows better than that. He is wanting to keep "godhood" from you!
So then God sends His Son to save sinful man. Jesus fulfills the 'sign' by having John immerse Him. The Father announces:
And of course, if satan was seeking to "be like the Most High" (Is14:14), Jesus would be God's "offspring", right? If he wants to take God's place, well, for sure, he wants to keep the 'heir' from coming to power.
So...when did Jesus know that He was God's Son? It says that the child would "know to refuse the evil and choose the good" (Is7:15-16) at a certain point. And one of the truths about Jesus is that He came "in the flesh" (1Jn4:1-3) When He was twelve He knew that God was His "Father". (Lk2:49) When He was preparing to go to the cross it says, "Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was come from God and was going to God" (Jn13:3) If the 'conclusion' of His life was that He "knows" that God is His Father, there is the inherit suggestion/understanding that there was some time (back before He was 12?) that He, as a child, didn't know?
We've also looked at this in the past:
On this side of the Resurrection/Rapture we may not have all the answers.
"Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." (1Jn3:2-3)
