A Voice in the
Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I should say I do not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I know Him and I keep His Word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and He saw and was glad. Then the Jews said to Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I AM!" (Jn8:54-58)
Recently as I happened to click on public TV, Wynona Judd was per- forming from "Austin City Limits." At one point in the program they went into this time of "church," doing some raucous tribal pagan rendition of something with "Jesus" in the words. After having watched her snarl into the cameras the "hypocrisy" of her singing "Jesus" and turning her eyes upwards was almost too much to endure. But if one watched closely, she could not really "quite" bring herself to look "fully upwards" nor to speak His Name "clearly" with conviction. In her heart she knows Jesus is not "her god." There is both fear and loathing of that "worthy name"- Ja2:7 Blaspheme in performance.
What of the man holding this country's "highest" office. Such a sham and DISGRACE to the whole concept of "confession and repentance"!! As if to say, "Yea, I did it...now, leave us alone. Let us have our PRIVACY." Putting the "Almighty's" seal on the retort with a blasphemous "..it's between [my family] and OUR GOD." Who is Mr. Clinton's "god"? For one whose presidency has consisted of NOTHING BUT LIES... Who is the "father" of lies? "You are of the Devil as father, and the LUSTS of your father you will do. He was a MURDERER from [the] beginning, and did not abide in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a LIAR and the father of it." (Jn8:44) Yes...there are many speculations of murders committed on behalf of this presidency, and the behind-the-scenes treasonous compro- mises of national security and integrity; for which causes his antics may be diversionary...?
While a commentary such as this is not sufficient to explore fully, let's observe a few descriptions of Jesus' "God." (Jn20:17, Ps110:1) Remembering that Jesus [IS] "also" God. (Jn1:1) The "I AM." (Jn8:58, Ex3:14) That Jesus is the representation of God's "essence." (Heb1:3)
Jesus came for JUDGMENT, "that they who do not see might see, and that they who [think they] see might be made blind." (Jn9:39) He said, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God. But to others I speak in parables, so that seeing they might not see and hearing they might not understand. (Lk8:10) While Jesus came "that they might have life..more abundantly" (Jn10:10) He also knows the heart.(Heb4:12) He knows "what was in man" (Jn2:25) and so He does not "commit Himself" (vs24) to all. After Pharaoh had hardened his own heart, then God hardened it some more in order to show His own glory. (Ex8:15,32,7:3)
No, God is not an "all-forgiving" God when man persists in rebel- lion. This is one of today's scourges in the "church." Everybody is "forgiving" one another, even when the offending party has not repented. (Lk17:4) And the offending party, who really wants to continue in sin, whines to the offended party, "Can't you just Forgive and Forget?" without repenting, "I'm sorry. I've offended you. Please forgive me. I will try not to do it again." And so, for the person who does not see their own sin, but insists upon "self-righteousness" ...God blinds them to Truth. This is one reason why many of the "christian church members" are going merrily along the "broad way" to destruction. (Mt7:13) "speaking lies in hypocrisy, being seared in [their] own conscience" (1Tm4:2)
They are "follow[ing] strangers." (Jn10:5) Jesus' God is the One to Whom Jesus is the "door" (vs9) and He opens to His own sheep. He "know[s] those who are [His] and is known by those who are [His]"(vs14) If a person doesn't know where/Who the Door is, then he does not belong. If he claims to "know god" it is not Jesus' God. Jesus says this quite plainly, "I have told you and you did not believe...you did not believe because you are not of My sheep. As I said to you, My sheep hear My voice, I know them..they follow Me"(vs25-27)
Jesus is LORD. (1Cor12:3, 2Cor4:5) "You call Me the Teacher, and Lord, and you say well, for I AM."(Jn13:13) Jesus is the very "essence" of the Father. (Heb1:3) Philip asked, "show us the Father.." (Jn14:8) And Jesus responds, "Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak of Myself, but the Father who dwells in Me, He does the works."(vs10) As He pleads, "believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me.."(vs11)
Who was there, ever, like Jesus, Who praised the Father and had the Father respond back as a "voice from the heaven saying, "I have both glorified [My name] and will glorify it again." (Jn12:28)
When a person believes in Jesus, they are not believing so much in Jesus, but "on Him who sent [Jesus]."(12:44) Because the Father is "all things in all." (Eph1:23, 1Cor15:28) Jesus said, "he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me." (12:45)
As such, Jesus has the full authority of the Father. The people were constantly amazed, "For He taught them as One having authority, not like the scribes [preachers & teachers]." (Mk1:22) When He "rebuked" the storm, the disciples were in wonderment, "Who then is this One? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!"(Lk8:25) This authority was displayed most graphically at the resurrection of Lazarus. "He cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, Here! Outside!" (Jn11:43) First time I read this in my new MKJV I pictured a parent standing by the back door, calling to the wayward child, "I said...COME HERE! NOW!" And the child, of course, recognizes the "tone" of the voice & knows he'd "better obey" ..or else!
Just prior to His crucifixion Jesus is imparting some last minute teachings and comfort to His disciples; and informs them that they can expect persecution. "In the world you shall have tribulation.."(Jn16:33) As He says, "If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept My saying, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me."(15:20-21)
Note well "who" will be the source of this persecution. "They shall put you out of the synagogue [church]. But an hour is coming that everyone who kills you will think that he bears God service."(16:2) Shortly after these words were uttered, it was the Jewish religious leaders who persecuted the early Church. Down through the ages, it has been various arms of "the church" that have engaged in crusades, inqui- sitions, pogroms. And even today, those who are True Christians are persecuted and "politicked out" of so-called "evangelical, fundamental" churches; and it is usually the pastors or leaders who kick them out when they dare to challenge the false doctrine or corruption.
What is Jesus' explanation of "why" these "christians" do these things? "They will do these things to you because they have not known the Father nor Me."(16:3) They claim to know God. But they persecute Jesus (Acts9:5) when they do these things to the True Believer. "These things they will do to you FOR MY NAME's SAKE, because they DO NOT KNOW Him who sent Me."(15:21)
If they are persecuting the Christian, and in turn, Jesus; the verdict is clear. "He who hates Me hates my Father also."(15:23) Amen!
