A Voice in the
" Dogs are Outside "
"Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right
to the Tree of Life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But
outside are dogs and sorcerers and prostitutes and murderers and
idolaters, and whoever loves and produces a lie." (Re22:14-15)
Last month we observed that the -nature- of dogs is to BARK. But that to
get into Heaven we need to ask for a new -nature-, which we illustrated
with a SINGING canary.
The opening passage, here, is talking about John's vision of the New
Heaven and New Earth, with the Holy City, New Jerusalem. If you read
Revelation chs 21-22, it will become obvious that it is a -pure- place.
It is a place where no evil or unrighteousness exists. The ultimate
blessing is what Adam and Eve lost when they rebelled, the Tree of Life.
When they sinned, mankind was cast out of the Garden of Eden, and the
cherubim with the flaming sword guarded against intrusion to the Tree of
Life. (Ge3:24) But once sin has been judged, God makes "all things new"
And so, in contrast to the Tree of Life is a brief list of all the
things that are -NOT- on the New Earth. The list is short, because
whatever evil and wickedness a person might think of, can be tied to one
of those things listed. Notice the list begins with "dogs". Those who
engage in many of the things listed, when they taunt and boast to each
other of their exploits, is there not an expression they use, as they
praise each other for their debauchery: "You dog, you!" as they
mockingly lift their faces to the heavens and open their lips with
"Ahoo, ahoo, ahoooooo!"
The "works of darkness" (Ro13:12, Eph5:11); the "shadow of death"
There are those who insist: Surely, a "loving God" would not condemn
anybody to hell. You mean to say that God would force a mother to see
her children being "tortured" in flames? Not stopping to think how that
very mother, herself, if she does not repent of her sin and receive
Salvation through Jesus Christ, is in those same flames. In her own
agony is not likely thinking of her children.
"Therefore Jehovah has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
according to my cleanness before His eyes. With the faithful You show
Yourself kind; with a mighty man of integrity You show Yourself upright;
with the pure You show Yourself pure; and with the perverse You show
Yourself twisted. You save the lowly people; but Your eyes are upon the
haughty, whom You bring down." (2Sam22:25-28)
"Do not be led astray, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that
he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap
corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap
eternal life." (Ga6:7-8)
"And he said to me, Do not seal the Words of the Prophecy of this Book,
for the TIME IS AT HAND. He who is unjust, let him be unjust still; he
who is filthy, let him be filthy still; he who is righteous, let him be
righteous still; he who is holy, let him be holy still. And behold, I am
coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according
to what his work shall be." (Re22:10-12)
And when judgment is being meted out, the angels agree...
"You are righteous, O Lord, the One who is and who was and who is to be,
because You have judged these things...for they are deserving. And I
heard another out of the altar saying, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true
and righteous are Your judgments." (Re16:5-7)
There is a basic Truth in these few verses: A person ends up for
eternity in the place for which they made preparations. Just as a person
who tends to a garden reaps the fruits, but a person who does not heed
the warnings about the icy bridge and skids off the road to his death;
so is Eternity. A person who heeds the warnings of God's Word, the
Bible, and repents of their sin, and receives Jesus Christ as Savior
goes to the New Heaven and Earth. But the person who does NOT heed the
warnings (Ezk3,33), and their name is NOT written in the Book of Life,
they spend forever in the Lake of Fire. (Re20:15)
"...where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched"
There are some famous cases in the news from time to time, where some
young female has "disappeared". And the family and friends get before
the media cameras pleading for her return. And then, when the news
finally is fulfilled, it is learned that she was killed, after "hooking
up" with seedy characters at some nightclub or similar place. And
friends and family bewail: How could anybody do such a horrific thing to
such a sweet, friendly, vivacious, fun-loving person? And they show
pictures of her during her life, made-up with cosmetics, and
half-dressed like a (what they used to call) street-walker (which is
pretty much how -most- females getup themselves these days). She was
behaving like a prostitute, and paid for her sin with her life. But her
family will bewail that she was "such an angel", how could this happen?
And in her death, they 'pray' to her as if she, now, was in Heaven. And
as such engage in "idolatry" and "sorcery" (by definition)
This is but one example. One kind of sin.
But others, seeing the evil of this sinful world, ask for God's
forgiveness, and in Jesus Christ are saved, and live righteous holy
lives. Their names are read from the Book of Life; and are now -in- the
Holy City. We have been promised a place "where righteousness dwells"
(2Pt3:13); and we round this corner and there they are... drunks,
prostitutes, idolators. The Believer has "escaped the defilements of the
world" (2Pt2:20), but here, now, is still confronted with it?! What sort
of God would He be if that were the case? How "loving" would that be to
subject His redeemed ones to those who refused to repent, after He had
promised a place of righteousness! It would make God a liar. But God is
"without lie" (Tit1:2)
Yes, on this earth, now, as -animals-, we have dogs as pets. But even
so, many people don't let their dogs into the house, because they are
dirty, their tail wagging slaps against things and leaves fur or knocks
things over, and their sniffing and licking leaves slobber. And if they
are into chewing, they ruin furniture. Many keep dogs as 'outside'
animals. Oh, but of course... aren't they so cuuuute as little puppies
In our figurative discussion, here, dogs are a picture of filth and
evil. And the passage says that, in terms of the New Heavens and Earth,
the dogs are "outside". Along with, anybody who conforms to ways of
those sins listed. In other words, if a -bark- indicates the presence of
a dog; those who do those sins listed are "sinners".
And God "does not hear sinners" (Jn9:31)
In Australia (where the "dingo ate the baby") any normal loving parents
are going to keep the dingos "outside", away from their babies. They do
not let the dingos in.
How much less does God let the dogs into His (holy) house, His New
