" Phinehas Priesthood "

This year there have been two bank robberies at one of the local bank branches of the bank I do business with. These robberies were accompanied by diversionary bombings at separate locations. Recently the FBI arrested some people thought to be the culprits.

Apparently the bandits belong to a cult called "Phinehas Priesthood." One of their members was interviewed on the Evening News with Dan Rather.

They take their cue from the incident recorded in Numbers 25, where Israel was commiting harlotry with Moab; intermarrying and worshipping Baal of Peor. A son of an Israelite leader brought "home" a daughter of a Moabite leader. As they were having relations, Phinehas, of the priestly line took a javelin into the tent where they were and pierced them both through with one blow, killing them, and staving off God's anger and accompanying plague. God said, "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal...Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace." (Num 25:11)

The current "Phinehas Priesthood" engages in bank robberies to fund their cult, and admit it openly. They are "at war" with the government of the United States.

Let us see the difference in these incidents. Phinehas, son of Eleazar, was carrying out God's retribution for idolatry and immorality in the setting of Israel, and the enforcement of God's Law. He did not bomb buildings, steal vans, and rob banks, putting "innocent" people at risk. He went to the core of the sin, in the setting in which it was appropriate. And, in that setting, the priesthood was the "law of the land." In that theocracy, the priest was both religious and judicial leader.

We, however, live in a society where there is separation between church and state. It is true; our society has deteriorated to the level of the nations Israel was commanded to go in and utterly destroy.

This depravity begins at the highest levels. And, even though the incumbent immoral, thieving, lying murderer will most likely be re-elected; as he most closely represents the characteristics and desires of the majority of our society, and they want somebody "like themselves"; we are not called to make war using the world's tactics. "The weapons of our warfare are not carnal.." (2Cor10:4)

Let us remember...when Jesus said, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's.." (Mt 22:21) He was talking about a state of corruption worse than the USA is in today. When Paul wrote, "Let every soul be subject to the higher powers..." (Rom 13:1), he was referring to leaders whose murderous exploits would make our current corrupt administration look like a "Sunday school picnic" by comparison.

If you are a Christian, please remember that our warfare is "Spiritual." "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Eph 6:12) Jesus told Pilate, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight...but now My kingdom is not from here." (Jn 18:36) Let us not be tempted to follow these cults.

If you are not a Christian, please understand that these cults are NOT "Christian." Even though they quote Scripture, and claim a connection to God, they are not. How can we know this? "By this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments." (1Jn 2:3) Conversely, if a group is not keeping His commandments, they are not His.

"Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor." (Rom13:7)

Amen.
