" A Model and a Christian? "
"having your behavior honorable among the Gentiles (unbelievers), that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation." (1Pt2:12)
There has been quite a ruckus all over the news and talk shows about Miss California, Carrie Prejean, and her answers during the recent Miss America beauty pageant. Not because they were like Ms.?Carolina a couple years ago whose answer included such pithy wisdom as: "Such as, those people in S.Africa and Iraq, such as, who don't have maps, such as..." No. Because she dared to say, "I believe that [marriage] should be between a man and a woman." In the case of Ms. Carolina, it was poking fun at her stupidity, more fitting of a "Jay Walking Allstar": I even caught a Jimmy Kimmel episode of her speech displayed on the easel, and Kimmel attacking it, word-by-word, phrase-by-phrase, with a pointer stick, ripping it to shreds in comedic humor. But Miss California? Who was able to string coherent words together in complete sentences, and speak to her convictions, which in America, we presumably have that right: String her up! Take away her crown! Strip her of her title; such a person is not fit to live! Booooo!! (thumbs down!)

And in the attacks, some photos have surfaced. The photo Jay Leno showed was of a seemingly 'legitimate' photo shoot, with a couple of places blocked from view, and Leno poked great fun at Prejean's excuse: That the wind had been blowing during costume change. The other one I googled (in preparation to write this commentary), and to be fair and non-pharisaical: That one actually shows less of her (even if it is not photo-shopped, as she claims) than was bobbing and bouncing around, barely covered, as she came strutting onto the stage during the actual pageant.

[Note: I did not watch the pageant. But once the controversy had erupted, and I -do- watch the news regularly, the news networks have shown that clip quite a few times. Thus, the nature of the event has been impossible to ignore. :]
Frankly, I have a real issue with somebody claiming to be a "christian" participating in something like beauty pageants, when one understands the nature of the events. One commentator made the comparison between them wearing swim suits on a stage, vs an older man wearing a swim suit on a beach. But what is a beauty pageant about? They wear skimpy swim suits and often-equally-revealing evening gowns: for what purpose? To display their modesty? (What an oxy-moronic sentence!) It is all about the "lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes" (1Jn2:16) Things of the "world" that the Christian is -NOT- to "love" (vs15) John is even stronger when he says: If a person loves these things, "the love of the Father is not in him" And, beauty pageants are NOTHING about "swimming"!

Like I say, I didn't watch the pageant....and have been purposely not saying anything until now, not knowing enough details, hoping maybe it would go away and die. But by now, so many things have exploded into the public arena, a couple of observations need to be made: One from Jay Leno's comedy moments, and the other from Miss Prejean's own speech.

But first, there is the matter of Miss Prejean speaking out about heterosexual marriage, being tied to her being an alleged "christian" The perversity crowd wants to crucify her for being different from their perversity, and proclaiming it nationally/globally; -because-, also, she claims to be a christian. Christians want to crucify her for her nudity and worldliness; and some 'christian feminists', likely for being pretty; many of them not knowing the difference between "modesty" and "frumpiness".

Paul said...

"Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from good will: The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds; but the others out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. What then? Only that in EVERY WAY, WHETHER IN PRETENSE OR IN TRUTH, CHRIST IS PREACHED; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice." (Php1:15-18)
Prejean was not proclaiming the Gospel of Salvation. But in this evil world she was proclaiming a Godly mandate and verity, that God "created them...in His own image...male and female" (Gen1:27)

There might be all sorts of things to criticize and condemn about Miss California; but in this evil world God is able to take anything, from any source, and turn it into a testimony as to His holy essence, and His design for mankind; even though in most cases it will be rejected. On other occasions we have also noted that a person can be saved while sitting in a catholic or mormon church, insofar as they quote or read anything from the Bible, because Salvation is "through the Word of God" (Rom10:17), not pagan liturgy.

And insofar as 'the' Donald let her retain her crown, the perversity crowd 'lost' this round.

But let's get to the main points of this commentary:

I don't watch Leno usually, except when he is having a guest I want to see; or sometimes to get his pulse on world events; or I fell asleep, missed the late news, and woke up in the middle of his monologue. In the midst of his comedy he also often interjects some real one-liner zingers of -TRUTH-.

This one night he spent a great deal of time poking fun at the whole Miss California scandal. At one point, after mocking her excuse that the "wind" had blown her costume, illustrating through the photo how the wind was NOT blowing, he also imitates her testimony:

"I'm a model and a christian" and immediately busts out laughing with, "ISN'T THAT THE WRONG ORDER??? Cackle! Ha Ha!!"

Well... !!! EXACTLY !!!

That is the whole point! Is Ms Prejean a Model, and -also- a Christian? Or is she a Christian, who models? And I suspect (if Leno quoted her accurately) if this matter had been properly sorted out in her own mind and heart, this recent controversy would never have happened.

Does a TRUE CHRISTIAN, who is mature in the Faith, get surgical augmentation and strut-her-stuff before the world, knowing that many males out there are lusting after her? Does she walk around before the cameras, arm-in-arm with her womanizing pageant benefactor, knowing that he is married to another woman? She might be (as they say) a drop-dead gorgeous knockout. Nothing wrong with that. So were Rachel, Esther and Job's daughters. But what is she doing with it? Being a wholesome beauty, or leading men astray, like the proverbial "strange woman"?

Oh, but... you are judging her much too harshly! Didn't she give a tessssstimony to God's design for male/female marriage? Who are you to judge her, when she testified for Goooood? (said swooningly with whiny voice)

Well then... let's take a look at that 'testimony' from her own mouth. This, complements of an Ann Coulter post; I would expect Ann, with her lawyer background, in spite of anything else a person might think of her public image, to quote something like this accurately:

"Well, I think it's great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offense to anybody out there. But that's how I was raised, and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman."
Ms Prejean -ended- her speech with the man/woman part. But what is her philosophy in general? Is it a Christian Godly stance?

When Moses exhorts Israel to "choose", -what- are they to choose?

"Choose LIFE (God's Law), that you may live." (De30:19)
Joshua exhorts...
"And if it seems evil to you to serve Jehovah, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers have served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah." (Josh24:15)
And what about the pagan ways of the heathen?
"take heed to yourself that you are NOT ENSNARED TO FOLLOW THEM, after they are destroyed before you, and that you DO NOT INQUIRE after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise. You shall NOT DO SO UNTO JEHOVAH YOUR GOD; for everything that is an abomination to Jehovah which He has hated, they have done unto their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire unto their gods. Whatever I am commanding you, take heed to do it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it." (De12:30-32)
Why is the world about to be judged?
"But SEXUAL PERVERSION and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor FOOLISH TALKING, NOR COARSE JESTING, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that NO PROSTITUTE, unclean person, nor covetous person, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one beguile you with empty words, for BECAUSE OF THESE THINGS THE WRATH OF GOD COMES UPON THE SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE. THEREFORE DO NOT BE PARTAKERS WITH THEM. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), proving what is acceptable to the Lord." (Eph5:3-10)
"Coarse jesting" is emphasized because... what do guys do when watching porn? Oh! You object to the word "porn"? What is a beauty pageant, if not a polished-up and nicefied porn show! (Just like Dancing with the Stars!) You don't like "prostitute" being emphasized? But in reality, for the thoughts of the heart, are these females not prostituting themselves for the lusts of male passions? What are the chances that such beauty pageants would even exist, if men didn't watch them?

And to proclaim with sugar-coated niceties that people can "choose" perverted 'lifestyles'; that is not the testimony of a TRUE CHRISTIAN. A True Christian hates what God hates; and God hates perversion. It is an abomination...

"You shall not lie with a male as with a female. It is an abomination... according to all the abominations of the nations which Jehovah had cast out before the children of Israel." (Le18:22, 1Ki14:24)
They are those who "will not inherit the kingdom of God" (1Co6:9)

Not only did Ms Prejean include the option to "choose" perversity, she said, "I think it's great..." that they can do so. A True Believer would certainly know how to answer such a question, indicating her belief in male/female marriage, without saying, essentially: You guys are OK, too. You believe what you believe, and I believe what I believe. Let's be all nicey nicey, and not offend anybody. Isn't it all nice and wonderful, as we get along happily together.

"Because the carnal mind is -ENMITY- AGAINST GOD; for it is not subject to the Law of God, nor indeed can be." (Rom8:7)
In calling the perverse choices "great", she actually negated any real "christian" testimony. And by their fruits they are known!
"You will know them from their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree produces excellent fruit, but a corrupt tree produces evil fruit. A good tree is not able to produce evil fruit, nor is a corrupt tree able to produce excellent fruit. Every tree that does not produce excellent fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Therefore from their fruits you will know them." (Mt7:16-20)
Ms Prejean -may- be a Christian. God knows for sure...
"Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands firm, having this seal: The Lord KNOWS THOSE WHO ARE HIS, and, Let everyone who names the name of Christ DEPART FROM INIQUITY." (2Ti2:19)
But if they are not "departing from iniquity", but living right in the midst of it and participating in it, those who are "named a brother", if they are "sexually immoral" and behaving like the world, Paul says to "purge out the old leaven" and "deliver such a one to satan for the destruction of the flesh" and to "not keep company with" them. (1Co5:5-11)

We might not be personally acquainted with Miss California, to have shaken her hand in the past, and then to shun her in that way; but our non-company is in not recognizing her as a member of the holy and spotless (Eph5:27) Church of Jesus Christ. If it is the case that she does know the Lord, the Lord will sort that out between her and Him, individually; just as a parent might take a child away to another room, away from the rest of the family, for the switching. But based on her life and testimony, participating in the base things of this world, to us she is -as- a heathen of the world.

She's a Model and (also) a Christian? Thus the current scandal; which also mocks Jesus Christ.

If she was a Christian first, perhaps her modelling would then also be a bit different? She would not be "Miss California" to the praise of men; but instead, she would be "to the praise of [God's] glory" (Eph1:12,14)

Amen!
